sensory overload
According to the National Autistic Society, a person who finds it difficult to process everyday sensory information can experience sensory overload. Too much information can cause stress, anxiety, and possibly physical pain. Autistic women and girls are more likely to ‘mask’ or camouflage their differences, hiding their discomfort to conform to social expectations.
Sensory Overload is based on my experience as a late diagnosed autistic woman. Documenting the visual information through patterns I see on a day to day basis, the prints depict the attempted containment of processing such stimuli.
The two colour silkscreen was printed onto 300gsm textured paper. I chose screen printing to deliberately make the ink bleed, misalign the prints, apply too much and too little pressure, representing the varying intensity of sensory information. It is overwhelming to observe the overlapping patterns, an insight into what I experience everyday.
